Ideas for Families on UNPLUGGED Night

PRESCHOOL - YOUNG CHILDREN

  • Snuggle under large blankets and read stories
  • Look through family photos or watch family videos
  • Make up a story together, let everyone contribute
  • Make a fort with blankets over chairs or tables, crawl under and read together or play games
  • Make a batch of play dough and use kitchen utensils for cutting and creating
  • Give everyone a magazine, find pictures and make a family collage
  • Bake a batch of cookies
  • Play cards or a simple board game
  • Create a family flag
  • Put small items in a bag and then take turns feelings inside the bag and guessing what it contains
  • Go to an appliance store and get a big box, decorate together
  • Create an obstacle course out of cushions and pillows
  • Make paper plate puppets and put on a show
  • Use paint or a big ink pad to make family hand prints
  • Use household items to create a family band

ADOLESCENT

  • Play board games
  • Wash the dog
  • Build a fort
  • Get out the family photo album
  • Clean the house together
  • Go sledding and make a snowman
  • Tell scary stories (with the lights out)
  • Make ice cream sundaes
  • Listen to classical music CDs, lights off, lying on the floor, taking turns saying what the music sounds like, what images in creates in your head
  • Play broomball
  • Bake cookies and share with the neighbors
  • Write a letter to a friend or relative
  • Fix something together
  • Read magazines or books together
  • Go through closets and gather unneeded items for charity
  • Teach your children some of your favorite childhood games
  • Cook dinner together
  • Play charades
  • Go on a hike
  • Put a puzzle together
  • Conduct a family survey of everyone’s favorite things
  • Talk about current events
  • Go bowling
  • Have a home movie night

  • Telephone to surprise distant friends and/or relatives
  • Invite someone to exercise - walk at a mall
  • Listen to and reminisce music from your past
  • Read a play, with friends taking parts
  • Plan a session for future activities with "unplugged" philosophy
